Since ancient times Dante Alighieri wrote about Pula in his Divine Comedy. The city that was founded 3000 years ago experienced his growth in roman times from which period the numerous antic monuments date. Today is Pula the economic center of the Istrian peninsula and a significant tourist destination thanks to many hotels, apartment resorts, campsites and holiday homes situated along the beautiful coast indented with bays and islands. The most remarkable sights of Pula are the antic monuments like the Triumphal Arch of the Sergi, the Twin and the Hercule Gate, the temple of Augustus and the most signifiant – the amphitheatre „Arena“ from the 1st century B.C. through which many emperors and gladiators have marched, and today is visited by many tourists wishing to attend a touch of history. During the summer months the Arena is a stage to numerous open-air concerts and opera shows.

National park Brijuni is situated not far from Pula, the islands are well-known for their natural beauty, nice beaches, numerous animal species and archeological monuments that date from the time B.C.
Other important places and towns around Pula are Medulin and Vodnjan. Medulin is a town south of Pula that offers to its guests nice sandy and gravel beaches, several hotels, campsites and a large number of apartments in private accomodation. In the area of Medulin the coast is exeptionally beautiful, the sea cristal clear and for nature lovers there is the Cape Kamenjak, a nature reservation with numerous intact gravel beaches.
The romantic city Vodnjan, rich in historical and cultural heritage well-known for its gothic-baroque style of building, is most famous for its vast olive groves and excellent extra vergine olive oil and during the summer months offers its guests different enetrtainment like fishing festivals. The most famous attraction of Vodnjan is the baroque church of Saint Blaž from 1800. with the highest belltower in Istria and mummies and relics from the saints of this region.
